What is a Harness?

Among the three important pieces of equipment for horse riding, the harness is one such key element that allows the animal to pull wagons and carriages. The essential point that we need to note is that all three items of horse riding are inter-connected with each. A rider may require – a saddle, bridle, and harness for horse riding variations. Likewise, it depends upon the riding discipline as to what components the rider chooses.

Most harnesses are designed while keeping in mind the comfort of the horse. Likewise, several manufacturers are into making custom leather harness that fits perfectly and does not cause discomfort or injuries. There are different varieties of harnesses, and depending upon the weight of the load, the rider can switch to any type accordingly.

What are the features of a horse harness?

In simple terms, a horse harness is a device that connects the horse to the vehicle to pull any kind of load. There are two primary features of a horse harness –

  1. Breast strap or breast collar design
  2. Collar or “hames” design

In most cases, the riders who go into events like horse show competitions tend to cart lightweight carts. A breast collar in the harness will do the work for such occasions. On the other hand, if the rider leans to carry heavy loads, they must not have a simple breast collar as it will put a lot of pressure on the windpipe and surrounding area.

More so, you can choose for collar harness where the horse requires to pull heavy loads. Likewise, it will not put much weight on the horse’s shoulder and divide it equally on the body structure. Moreover, for pulling heavy weights, the harness must include the horse’s collar that allows the animal to use its full strength without restricting the air supply.

  • Horse collar – It is a collar that goes around the horse’s neck and allows the animal to pull the weight. Furthermore, it comes in padded and loose fitting that does not cause any injury to the animal.
  • Breast collar – It goes around the horse’s chest from one side to the other. Most riders prefer it to pull lightweight carriages and wagons.
  • Hames – It comes in attachment with the horse collar with two metal or wooden strips. Likewise, the horse will be able to pull with full force without any breaking.
  • Harness saddle or “pad” – A small piece of padding that looks quite similar to a saddle but has fewer features. In general, it allows the owner to sit on the horse’s back for a short duration.
  • Traces – In simple words, traces are chains and straps that are useful in pulling the load from the breast collar or the hames.
  • Girth – It is a small yet important leather strap that goes firmly around the horse’s girth. More so, it attaches the harness saddle with the whole equipment set.
